Ben Verwaayen, CEO Alcatel-Lucent
This half day summit, hosted by the FT and ETNO, is taking place in Brussels on 23 September 2010 and will discuss the future for Europe's broadband world.
A new digital agenda for Europe is one of the key initiatives of the EU 2020 strategy. As the world becomes more connected and consumers more demanding, the European Commission is planning to stimulate the roll-out and take-up of high-speed broadband networks to speed up the rate of growth in the EU economy. This will be outlined in the opening address by Neelie Kroes, European Commissioner for Digital Agenda.
Ben Verwaayen is one of several high-profile corporate leaders participating in the Digital Agenda debate. He is speaking on a session entitled, "Taking Europe's infrastructure to the next level: Smart policies for high-speed networks."
This interactive session will reflect on how to shape the EU policy framework for next generation access networks to ensure Europe remains a champion in network connectivity and a hub for digital media.
The session will also explore:
• What regulatory model will attract investment and keep pace with the changing shape of the market?
• What incentives should be made available to all investors in NGA to make high-speed networks a priority?
• How should regulatory approaches address the risks involved?
• How can the right balance be struck between fostering competition and facilitating investment?
• Is the EU broadband strategy forward-looking enough?
The summit will provide a platform for industry input to the debate, bringing together an exclusive audience of chief executives from ETNO member companies and other leading ICT organisations for a frank, high level discussion and exchange of views with European policy makers.
